President vetoed an amendment of the competition law
The amendment was intended to stop some practices used by large retail chains, particularly abusing of so-called economic dependancy. In the law’s first draft, this definition included situations when a larger company forced another smaller business to pay money in advance, or to provide advertisement for the larger partner.
But the meaning was modified by amendments after the first and second reading. Finally, economic dependency was defined as a purchasing company accepting goods or services from suppliers on conditions not suitable to the suppliers.
„The buyer is given no instrument to see what is or isn’t suitable for the supplier, so it can easily be abused,” commented Martin Pecina, the Chairman of the Office for the Protection of Economic Competition. The Office supported the modification of the competition law in the beginning, but changed its position after the results of the parliamentary interventions.
